Episode 44 Show Notes
Back from Vacation!
We are back home from a week spent in Las Vegas with Suzy’s parents. I wasn’t sure how the trip was going to go since neither Suzy or I gamble, but we had a great time at the Hoover Dam, the Grand Canyon and just being out of our own zip code for a week!
Can Hens Be Vegetarian?
The Washington Post reported on the surge in interest in eggs from vegetarian chickens. Suzy and I spend a little time talking about how hens are not naturally vegetarian and that the only way you can get them to be so is to lock them in a cage so they won’t have access to bugs, worms and other tasty treats.
Is it Safe for Chickens to Eat Dog Poop?
Tracy wrote us a great email asking about chickens eating dog poop. While is is certainly not a fun to think about your laying hens eating dog poop, it is a normal behavior for chickens to explore poop for tasty bits to eat. While there are a few dangers of something being passed from dog to bird, they are much more likely to catch those things from wild birds.
If you really can’t stomach the idea of weird things your birds may eat, your only option may be to keep them in their coop full time. Just make sure your coop has plenty of space for them to live.
