Episode 0 – The Pre-Podcast Episode, an introduction to Don, Suzy and the Online Chicken School Podcast.
We (Don & Suzy), are a married couple who live in Southwest Florida. Two years ago we decided to move out of our condo and onto a five-acre mini-ranch. We were both very excited to start doing things we couldn’t do living in a condo under the watchful eye of a home-owners’ association. Suzy had a ten year plan to get chickens, sheep, goats, pigs and dogs. I had a three month plan to accomplish the same things.
Chickens turned out to be our favorite animal to raise. They are relatively easy to care for and fit well into a backyard setting even if you have significantly less than a few acres to play with. We scoured the state to find the first few birds and then ended up finding the right ones just a few miles down the street.
In the beginning, we really didn’t have any idea what we were doing. We relied on the friendly farmer who sold us the chickens to give us the information we needed to get started. Suzy’s and my OCD kicked in pretty quickly and we began to learn everything we could about chickens. Within a year we began our micro-hatchery, breeding and selling small numbers of baby chicks to locals who wanted to keep a flock in the backyard.
One day, Suzy noticed an ad on Facebook for one of our local cooperative extension offices and an introduction to chickens class they were holding. She joked that we now knew enough to conduct our own chicken class. A month later, we began holding hands-on backyard chicken classes on our little ranch.
As our tiny little chicken operation has developed, we really enjoy educating people about chickens and how to care for them.
The Podcast [09:00]
We created the podcast to begin sharing our knowledge and experience with anyone who is willing to listen to us to talk for a half an hour at a time.
If you don’t have chickens yet, we hope to encourage you to take a few steps to figure out if keeping a flock is right for you. If you already have chickens, we want to give you information to make your experience more enjoyable.
There are many different ways to raise chickens. Many of the choices you make for your flock will be influenced by your geographic location, local weather patterns, predator situation, work schedule and just plain personal preferences. Our goal is not to convince you to raise chickens the way we do. We hope to give you some options to consider and the information you need to make the right decisions for your situation.
